Eddie Earl and his '34 Ford Coupe set to race
Lynn Earl was kind enough to share this wonderful photo of his father, Eddie Earl, and his 1934 Ford five window race coupe. Eddie Earl was quite a racer; the car in the photo above was raced at the Salt Vault Oval Track and held a record there for several years.
Lynn also showed us another photo of his father but this time he was in the car at the starting line. That photo was in the September 2004 issue of Hot Rod Magazine. If you open that issue of Hot Rod to page 75 you will find a 1954 photo of Eddie Earl leaving the starting line in #43 B/Altered at the old Salt Lake Airfield.
The article is titled “Dawn of the Drags” and was part of a series of articles Hot Rod ran on the birth of drag racing and the “Drag Safari”. The “Drag Safari” was a program sponsored by the fledgling NHRA and covered by Hot Rod Magazine. The purpose of the “Drag Safari” was to go around the country to teach local racers how to run safe and fair races and Eddie Earl was right there in the mix on the Salt Lake stop. If you get a chance, look up the article; it’s super informative and contains not only a photo of a great local racer but some Salt Lake Racing history as well.
Speaking of history, we also have to include these photos of Lynn Earl’s 1961 Ford Galaxy. Eddie Earl was the original owner of this car but Lynn was with him the day he purchased the car and Lynn was the one that drove the car off the showroom floor! Talk about original, as the photo says both the interior and the paint are original on this car but you would never know that it didn’t just roll off the showroom floor yesterday. We at Team Frank would like to thank Lynn Earl for sharing both his car and some great local racing history with us!
